The Société des Bains de Mer and boxing – an illustrious history!
On 29 February 1912 an historic European Middleweight Championship boxing match took place in La Condamine between Englishman Jim Sullivan and Frenchman Georges Carpentier, who won the title.
The event was organised by the International Sporting Club of Monaco at the instigation of its director, Mr Camille Blanc.
He started a tradition that continued in February 1920, with a major Monte Carlo boxing event that saw the champions of the day compete for titles in three series of fights held in the Palais du Soleil.
More boxing events punctuated the Principality’s sporting calendar, in 1931, in 1935 with a gala event organised on the Casino terraces, in 1939 when spectators watched French, international and military champions battle each other in the ring, and again in 1971, 1992 and 1994 with the World Heavyweight Boxing Championship in the Salle des Etoiles, which was also the venue for the Monte-Carlo Pro Boxing Masters tournament in 2005 and 2006.
The Monte-Carlo SBM group partnered in 2013 with Golden Gloves to keep up this long-lived sporting tradition that began a century ago.
The “Monte-Carlo Million Dollar Super Four”, an exceptional boxing event in Europe took place on Saturday 30th March 2013 at the Sporting Monte-Carlo: a mammoth triple-header !
