The Bar des Scorpions at the Hôtel Hermitage paid tribute to Princess Grace

Located just a stone’s throw away from the Place du Casino, the Hôtel Hermitage has been catering to luxury connoisseurs for over a century with its own brand of sumptuous extravagance. One of the hotel’s gems is its glass roof designed by Gustave Eiffel, which used to house the magnificent winter garden. The Bar des Scorpions, which opened in the late 1960s, used to be located nearby, where the Crystal Bar is now located.

Rest assured, there was nothing frightening about this place – or any spiders. The Bar des Scorpions was actually a tribute to Princess Grace, whose zodiac sign was Scorpion, as she was born on 12 November. On 15 November 1969, during the Bal des Scorpions (Scorpions Gala), the Princess inaugurated the establishment and celebrated her 40th birthday by the same occasion in the presence of a hundred guests whose zodiac sign was also Scorpion. Wearing a black Balenciaga gown for the occasion, Princess Grace welcomed Richard Burton and Elisabeth Taylor, who was wearing a cape with two embroidered scorpions and a lucky jewel around her neck. David Niven and his Scorpion wife were also in attendance. The birthday cake immortalised by the photographer was unforgettable.
