The Monte-Carlo Jazz Festival
The history of music in the Principality of Monaco dates back 150 years and is filled with big names and legendary events. Ravel, Berlioz, Fauré and Saint Saens are just some of the composers who have chosen Monaco to showcase their work. Today, many DJs come to perform at Jimmy’z Monte-Carlo, and for the last 40 years, the greatest performers in international pop have been at the top of the bill at the Monte-Carlo Sporting Summer Festival. It was to honour this musical connection that the Société des Bains de Mer decided in 2006 to celebrate the most magical music of all: jazz. ‘Eclectic’ is a buzzword at the Monte-Carlo Jazz Festival held in mid-November, bringing together the greatest names and up-and-coming personalities of all different kinds of jazz. The festival enjoyed instant success in Monaco, which filled up with jazz aficionados at a time of year considered to the off season. Jazz fans have thus been flocking to Monaco since 2006 to see the greatest jazz performers in the prestigious setting of the Opéra de Monte-Carlo. Just like the young radio station Europe 1 did in the 50s led by Daniel Filippachi, Monte-Carlo SBM dedicates several days in November to “Those who love jazz”.
